The latest appointments and employment announcements from the hedge funds industry.
BNP Paribas Corporate and Investment Banking has appointed Luke Edwards as the head of its US convertible securities business based in New York. He will report to Namuk Cho, head of flow and structured trading for the Americas. Prior to joining he was US deputy chief investment officer for the KBC AIM Hedge Fund, known for convertible arbitrage and capital structure investing.
Antigua and Barbuda's Ministry of Finance, the Economy and Public Administration has appointed John Benjamin as interim administrator and chief executive officer at the Financial Services Regulatory Commission (FSRC). His position was effective from August 24, 2009 for a period of not more than six months while the government conducts an international search for a permanent chief executive to fill the position from January 2010. Benjamin brings over 40 years of professional experience in banking and finance to the FSRC.
Barclays Capital has named Ian Montgomery as chief operating officer of Canada and John Kennedy as chief compliance officer of Canada. Montgomery will be based in New York and report to Justin Bull, chief operating officer of global markets. He joined the company in 2003 and assumes this new responsibility in addition to his current role as COO for principal credit at Barclays Capital. Kennedy will be based in Toronto and will report to Alex Guest, head of global futures, BARX and eCommerce compliance, with responsibility for Canadian operations. Previously Kennedy was the director of compliance for Fidelity Investments in Toronto.
In a separate move Barclays Capital announced Ashley Fiilson has joined as managing director, head of prime services, Europe, Middle East and Africa. He will be based in London and will oversee the company's prime services franchise across EMEA which incorporates equities financing, fixed income financing, futures and BarCap's multi-asset class prime brokerage platform. He will report to Ajay Nagpal, head of prime services. Fiilson has over 15 years of experience across European markets in a variety of trading, financing and risk management roles.
Legal & General has appointed Simon Ellis as managing director of the unit trust business. He will report to Mark Gregory, executive director, savings. Ellis has worked in the industry for over 25 years. Recently he was the managing director for the Financial Services Skills Council.
GLG Partners has appointed David Waller as the company's first director of communications. He has spent the last two years as a partner at Maitland, the financial public relations company where he acted for a number of clients including UKFI, the body that manages the UK government's investments in the banking sector. He will join GLG in November 2009.
Butterfield Fulcrum has announced additions to its board of directors: Dean Barr, a former head of liquid alternative investments for Citigroup Alternative Investments; John Moore, past global head of investment banking at Morgan Stanley; and Robert Mulderig, chairman of the board of Bank of NT Butterfield & Son.
Carne Global Financial Services has added to its London team with the appointments of Bill Blackwell as product development specialist and Aman Jairath as a regulatory compliance specialist. Blackwell joins from JP Morgan. Jairath joins from The CCL Partnership, compliance services provider.
Mirabaud & Cie has appointed Lionel Aeschlimann as managing partner from January 1, 2011. Currently he is a partner at law firm Schellenberg Wittmer where he heads the banking and finance group. Initially he will take up a position at as a member of the executive committee.
Future Capital Partners, the £6 billion alternative investment boutique, has appointed Trevor Castledine as its chief operating officer. Formerly he was managing director and head of financial products at Royal Bank of Scotland.
Rothstein Kass has named Eric Bass, an experienced business leader and management consultant, as a principal in the business advisory services practice. Bass brings over 20 years of related experience to the position.
Global macro hedge fund, 36 South has hired Maya Abou Zeid as head of sales for the UK and EMEA. At BGI, Maya was a senior associate and investment strategist in the client solutions group. She has particular experience as a product specialist in multi strategy fund of hedge funds and smart beta strategies covering fixed income, global macro and equities.
Markit has appointed Richard Paddle as managing director and head of its European structured finance business based in London. Paddle has over 15 years of experience within the structured finance and fixed income markets, including asset-backed, residential mortgage-backed and commercial mortgage-backed securities. He joins from Bank of Scotland Treasury where he was head of investment portfolio and responsible for the bank's credit liquidity portfolio and its structured investment portfolio.
Neonet, the provider of global agency brokerage and trading technology, has appointed two senior members to lead its global sales and trading team and further additions to the team. Peter Johansson extends his responsibilities with the position as global head of equities based in Stockholm, overseeing the sales and trading teams globally. Previously he was head of trading. Patrik Ristner will be global head of sales based in London. He will be managing a team of 11 sales people across five offices in Europe and US.
Senior sales executives both in Europe and US have been added to the team. In the US Lynn Cannizzaro and Jerome DeSantis have joined. Cannizzaro was previously with Painewebber, Credit Suisse, JP Morgan, and Société Générale. DeSantis joins from Axes and Bloomberg Tradebook and technology solutions for GL Trade in New York. In the UK Christian Bower joins from Portware.
John Kelleher as been appointed as the chairman of the law firm Carey Olsen with offices in Guernsey, Jersey and London. Advocate Kelleher will continue to be a partner and head of the Jersey litigation group and takes over the chairman's role from Anthony Olsen who retired from the firm in June. The remainder of Carey Olsen's management team will not change. Kelleher will be working closely with John Greenfield, the managing partner in Guernsey, and Alex Ohlsson, the managing partner in Jersey.
Private wealth, philanthropy and partnerships law firm Maurice Turnor Gardner has appointed David Shearing as finance director. He has had a long career in financial services, most recently at Allen & Overy where he was head of capital projects.
Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison has appointed Robert Goldbaum as a partner in the corporate department, focusing on mergers and acquisitions transactions in the investment management industry. He will be based in New York. Prior to joining he was a principal at HighView Investment Group, an investment management company targeting acquisitions of minority interests in independent alternative asset managers.
Russell Investments has appointed Irshaad Ahmad to the new role of managing director, UK effective September 15. He joins from Russell's Canadian business. Russell Investments is a global investment company with $151 billion in assets under management as of June 30, 2009.
Spencer House Partners has named Knut Eirik Dahl formerly of JP Morgan as a partner. He has 18 years of investment banking experience will focus on providing merchant banking and advisory services to clients in the investment management industry.
The Universities Superannuation Scheme, the UK's second largest private sector pension fund, has appointed Roger Gray as chief investment officer. He succeeds Peter Moon who is retiring after 17 years at USS. Roger was previously chief investment officer at Hermes Investment Management.
